Having moved to the Netherlands partially for its proximity to water and the wonderfully unique canals in its cities, I am more than excited to use yet another way of getting to know Amsterdam from the waterside by actually swimming through the urban waterways! Even more so, I am excited to do it to contribute to research on finding ways to cure the fatal nervous system disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the last year, on the initiative of an amazing team member, we swam the 2 km in a lake although the swim was technically cancelled due to COVID. This year, I am really looking forward to swim in the actual canals of Amsterdam and catch the electrifying energy of seeing all of the other city swim participants challenging their fitness for the same cause. I cannot wait to see what collective effort can make possible in finding ways of improving treatments for a yet unurable disease!
