Amsterdam City Swim

By organising a unique and social swimming event with impact in Amsterdam's canals every year, the Amsterdam City Swim Foundation aims to raise as much money as possible to fund research into finding a cure for the deadly disease ALS.

History

The event came to life after 14 friends swam across the Hellespont on 30th August 2011. They did this for their mutual friend Weert Jan Weerts, who suffered from ALS. Inspired by the many positive cheers and donations, the 14 friends decided to take their action further, and from this we are now able to take part in the swimming event the Amsterdam City Swim every year.

What is ALS?

ALS is a fatal disease that impacts the nerves that control muscles. As motor nerve cells die, signals from the brain and spinal cord no longer reach the muscles. As a result, the muscles fail one by one. After the first symptoms, patients live an average of three to five years. In the Netherlands, an average of 1,500 people live with ALS, or the related diseases PSMA and PLS. Every year, 500 new patients arrive and 500 also die.
